Summerset Arts Festival 2014 at Scarborough Beach

 On its 6th year, the Summerset Arts Festival in the Scarborough Beach area is off and running till the 8th of February. On offer are a fantastic range of live music, comedy, theatre, visual arts, and children’s events to participate in, brought to us by the City of Stirling.

To get you in the festive feel, here are some of the highlights and main events for this year's Summerset Arts Festival.

Sunset Veranda

The social hub at Scarborough Sunset Veranda, located at Scarborough Beach is where you’ll find most of events including live theatre, comedy, music, and family entertainment. Join the Big Hoo-Haa for some improvised sketch comedy on 5th February, and for more comedy and laughs, Luke McGregor - My Soul Mate is out of My League will be performing on the 6th February.

Sunset Wine

The Sunset Wine will be held on the weekend of the 1st and 2nd February from 3pm to 730pm - you can either pre purchase tickets or get tickets at the door, if tickets haven't been sold out. This event is a perfect setting to taste local wines along with some tasty tapas and entertainment, whilst enjoying the beautiful sunset from the Scarborough Beach Reserve.

Tales & Trails Heritage Walk

The Tales & Trails Heritage Walk explores the history of Star Swamp along with an expert guide. After the walk, you can enjoy some morning tea at Mount Flora Museum whilst Tracy Willet, Museum Curator, will share some interesting stories about the local area. The excursion will also include a visit to the museum which houses an interesting collection of memorabilia and historical exhibits - definitely one for the history buffs amongst us. The Tales & Trails Heritage Walk is on this Sunday February 2nd from 8am to 10am at Henderson Environment Centre, which is the meeting point for both the start and finish of the walk.

Stirling Farmers Markets

Head to the City of Stirling Admin Centre car park on Sunday morning 2 February from 730am to 1130am for the Stirling Farmers Markets. Pick up some fresh, local produce for the week, and get your caffeine fix for the morning along with some brekkie. The markets will be bustling with entertainment and live music for the whole family to enjoy.

Community Jam

If you feel like a good song and dance, head to the community jam to join fellow musicians at the Maureen Grierson Community Centre rooftop on on Sunday 2 February from 5pm to 630pm. Beginners through to professional musicians are all welcome. Enjoy a Community Jam that will be a lot of fun, with a view of the ocean.

Paper Planet

One for the kids - spark your imagination by visiting the world of paper. You name it: a paper forest of trees, paper leaves, paper birds, and paper creatures. This newly created world event is a perfect setting for the kids to discover, create, and engage withing a constantly changing environment. This experience is the brainchild of  Polygot Theatre who specialise in creating interactive theatre experiences for children. The kids will enjoy making crafts out of simple materials, playing games among the trees, and recreating sounds of the forest which can only be heard in Paper Planet. Bring your kids to the Karrinyup Library Outdoor Forecourt on the 4th and 6th of February.

Polka Dot Vintage Markets

The Polka Dot Vintage Markets to be held on the 7th and 8th February from 4pm to 9pm will appeal to lovers of all things vintage. There will be market stalls offering a range of retro clothing, accessories, vintage jewellry, collectables, and vinyl records. Head to the Scarborough Beach Reserve for this polka dot event.

The Lorax & Dirtgirl

The Lorax and Dirtgirl is a entertaining and educational event for the kids to learn about caring for our environment. Based on the classic Dr. Seuss book and feature film The Lorax, the main characters heads on a journey to speak on behalf of the trees against the greedy Once-ler. Dirtgirl on the other hand is a gumboot-wearing girl who loves to grow tomatoes, knows all the cloud names, and drives around in a big orange tractor. The Lorax and Dirtgirl will be held at the Scarborough Beach Amphitheatre on the 7th of February from 630pm to 730pm.

Beach Concert

Set against the backdrop of the beach, the grand finale concert for the Summerset Arts Festival will be led by Birds of Tokyo – the five piece alternative rock band originating from Perth. Nathan Kaye, an emerging blues and roots artists, will also be another line up at this concert, have performed alongside Jason Mraz, Pete Murray and other top acts around town. The Beach Concert of Summerset Arts Festival will be held at Scarborough Beach Amphitheatre on February 8th. Event starts at 7pm.
