It’s time to celebrate Deepavali in Perth - the Swan Festival of Lights will be held from the 9th to the 13th of November in the Supreme Court Gardens. The festival will feature colourful music and dance performances from 6.30pm each night, and vegetarian food from 4.30pm each day. There will also be a fireworks extravaganza to look forward to during each night’s festivities. This event has been going strong since 2008, and every year it showcases many fine performances and tasty Indian vegetarian food.

The Deepavali “festival of lights” is a celebration of life,  positivity, hope and energy that lasts for five days. It is an important festival celebrated by the Indian community in Australia and by many of our Asian neighbour countries such as Malaysia, Singapore, and India. As well as being commonly referred to as the “festival of lights”,  it is also a celebration of “the awareness of the inner light” in each person.

On the food front at the Swan Festival of Lights, you can look forward to tasty Indian food such as dosais, uttapam (pancakes made from urad dhal), parathas and delicious curries provided by Annalakshmi on the Swan vegetarian restaurant at Barrack Street jetty. There will also be tasty snacks and sweets on offer such as samosas and gulab jamun (a sweet Indian milk based dessert).

For entertainment, you will see performers from the Temple of Fine Arts International and other multicultural performance groups. Watch the exotic and colourful Vishwa Vinayaka, listen to the Damaru fusion ensemble, and see Ustad Usman Khan - a famous sitar maestro from India - in action. Other groups performing during Deepavali include the Chung Wah Dance company and flamenco dancing from Casa Del Compas. You will also be able to enjoy the strong beats of African dance from Olivier Tarpaga whose specialisation is the Dejembe drum, and lively Ukrainian-cossack and Urainian folk dances by the local Roztiazhka Ukrainian Cossack dancers.
