The Swan River is a distinctive element of Perth city. It winds through many suburbs of Perth and along downtown on its way out to the Indian Ocean, but many feel that Perth is not really a waterfront city. They are disappointed by the lack of usage of the Perth waterfront, and therefore the Department of Planning have drawn up several different plans to create a more integrated space between the Swan River and downtown. These plans hope to transform Perth from a largely functional city into a city that seamlessly integrates history, culture, business and leisure.

Perth is a great place to travel to soak up the history and culture of Australia. The Bell Tower, situated near the Swan River and the Old Perth Port, was opened to the public in 2000. Since its opening, it has attracted many tourists and is now one of the must-see places in Perth. It is especially suited for seniors and kids, and it’s great for a family day out.

The Hay Street Mall is one of two parallel pedestrian shopping malls in the Perth CBD. Like the parallel Murray Street Mall, the Hay Street Mall features a variety of independent and chain stores (including department store giant David Jones) to cover all your fashion and entertainment needs.

How easy is it to live in Perth? Very easy according to the latest liveability survey compiled by the Economic Intelligence Unit, the international research arm of The Economist magazine.

This year sees Perth finish in eighth position, dropping down three places from equal fifth in 2009. Points awarded this year were 95.9, down only a fraction from 96.0 last year.

The Murray Street Mall is one of two parallel open air shopping malls in the Perth CBD. (The other is the Hay Street Mall.) In the bustling but relaxed Murray Street Mall, you’ll find a series of quality independent specialty stores alongside large department stores such as Target, Myer and David Jones. The mall is closed to traffic so you can take your time exploring the boutiques and cafés, browsing for books, phones and cameras, shopping for a souvenir, and perhaps even finding the perfect piece of jewellery for someone special.
