Perth Theatre Company kicks off its exciting line up of performances for the 2015 season with its first – “From the Rubble”.

From the Rubble tells the stories of women in conflict zones world over inspired by stories from award winning Perth writer and journalist Sophie McNeill.  McNeill who won the Walkley Award Young Journalist of the Year Award for her coverage of “Palestine: Divided it Falls”, draws inspiration from her time working as a foreign correspondent with SBS’ Dateline travelling on assignment to far flung countries such as Lebanon, Iraq, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Pakistan, Afghanistan, India, Thailand and Mexico.

In this world premiere, Artistic Director Melissa Cantwell harnesses the evocative images as told through Sophie’s stories to provide a glimpse into the lives of civilians in conflict zones.

On meeting Sophie, Melissa Cantwell said:

“The first time we met, she came into the Perth Theatre Company office with her duffle bag and flak jacket on the way to SAS training. She went off to leap out of a helicopter, I dove into her stories. There began the process of unearthing the imagery in her work which would form the basis of what we hope will be a compelling and moving immersive piece."

This multi art piece form narrates compelling personal stories that find joy in the resilience and ingenuity of women the world over,  and will explore many themes including that of displacement, transformation and hope.

The Perth Institute of Contemporary Art’s (PICA) Performance Space will be transformed into an immersive world, created by visual artist Fleur Elise Noble and a team of Perth innovators, including songstress Mei Saraswati.

From the Rubble by the Perth Theatre Company investigates our contemporary relationship to conflict in a work that promises to be unforgettable. It will kick off on its opening night on the 16 March.
