It’s not every day that a special movie comes along – and for me Robot Dreams is one of them.
It is the 1980s New York City, and the main character Dog assembles Robot as a companion and they become best buddies until something unfortunate happens to Robot.
Based on the popular graphic novel by the North American writer Sara Varon, Robot Dreams captures your heart from the get go as you follow the main character Dog in his pursuit of friendship.
His adventures are many and varied – he has some feel good experiences and at the same time, sometimes it seems like the whole world is against him.
When he has a win, you are on the sidelines cheering for him, and when disaster strikes, you feel for this special Dog.
But Dog with his ever shining personality never gives up – he just keeps going – always in hope of a brighter day and more happier moments in life.
Director Pablo Berger has brought to life Varon’s graphic novel in true spirit.
Interestingly, all the characters in the movies are entirely non-human as graphic writer Varon claims to be bad at drawing humans!
Also, there is no dialogue in the film but that in no way deters from its enjoyment.
If you enjoy a feel good movie that is endearing and heartfelt, then Robot Dreams is an excellent pick. Its a suitable movie for both adults and children, though it is primarily a film for adults so young children may not always grasp all the themes in the movie but should still enjoy it nonetheless.
Robot Dreams is showing as part of Lotterywest Film Season, Perth Festival till this Sunday 24 December.
