Renowned for being the 3rd largest festival in the world of its kind, the Fringe World Festival 2018 will kick off in Perth with fireworks of its own over the 26th January Australia Day long weekend.
In the upcoming month, audiences will be entertained by an action packed program of comedy, theatre, circus, comedy, cabaret, dance and musical acts. There is something for every taste – with individual shows rated from mild “family friendly” to very hot on the saucy sizzle scale.
Some highlights over the season include:
The Buskers Weekend – street buskers will take to the Murray St and Hay St malls in the Perth CBD over the weekend 2nd to 4th February with over 100 performances.
Head down the staircase to the right of His Majesty's Theatre main doors, and you'll enter Downstairs at the Maj, an intimate venue bringing the best of cabaret to Perth.
This time it was the turn of Catherine Alcorn, who along with her three-piece band was bringing her new show, Cathartic, to Perth audiences.
Little beknownst to some of us in Perth, tucked away downstairs at His Majesty’s Theatre in the CBD is a cosy, cabaret style setting that makes for a perfect evening of entertainment.
On this particular Friday evening, we headed out on a balmy summer’s night to watch Turner’s Turn by Geraldine Turner at Downstairs at The Maj.
Geraldine Turner is a name that is synonymous with Australian musical theatre – her career spans over four decades, with stage performances in many musicals including Chicago, Wicked, Oliver, Guys and Dolls, and Into the Woods.
On the surface, Once We Lived Here is the quintessential Aussie story, the stoic farming family (the McPhersons) doing it tough on their drought stricken property. A previous family tragedy has led to the family falling apart, but now a fast approaching crisis has brought them back to the homestead for what might be their last reunion.
Set in the not too distant past, Once We Lived Here can be viewed as a microcosm of Australian life.
It’s that time of the year again as the annual Swan Festival of Lights comes alive to celebrate Deepavali. This year, the event will be held at the scenic riverside location of the Supreme Court Gardens.
Deepavali is a world-wide celebration of the Inner Light that resides in all of us – that of the positive qualities of hope, peace, harmony, knowledge, joy and truth. This year also marks a rather special one being the 10th year anniversary of the festival!
The weekend’s festivities over the weekend will provide an extravaganza of dance, music, painting, rhythms, and Indian folklore on offer, from both local and international artists.
On a balmy Monday evening in Perth, The State Theatre Centre of WA was abuzz with much excitement, festivities and champagne as the Black Swan State Theatre Company unveiled its line-up of plays for the 2018 Season.
The Company have crafted a superb line up of plays and festivities for all in Perth to enjoy in 2018.
Artistic Director Clare Watson of Black Swan State Theatre Company said:
"Curating the 2018 season we began by asking the question: "What should we be talking about right now, as citizens of the world, as Western Australians, as humans? We wanted the theatre that you see at Black Swan to catalyse and contribute to the big conversations."
"Our season in 2018 is designed to encourage compassion and extend empathy and most importantly, to entertain."
