Happy Chinese New Year to everyone in Perth!

In Perth, we are lucky enough to be exposed to a range of people from a diverse set of cultures and backgrounds, including those who are of Chinese and Vietnamese ethnicity.

According to the Lunar calendar, 2012 is the Year of the Dragon and is celebrated from the 23rd January for 15 days.

Last weekend (April 4^th) my brother and I headed off to the West Coast Blues n Roots Festival!

Both of us had work on Sunday morning, but after a quick clothing change (raybans…check, doc martins…check, cool festival hat…check) we jumped on the 106 and headed down Canning Highway to Fremantle.

Everyone knows that food at festival events = long queues and exuberant prices, so we grabbed a pie from the Fremantle bakehouse (best pies in Freo) and a cider at the Sail and Anchor and made our way to the gig. The West Coast Blues n Roots Festival (WCBR) is held at Fremantle Park, just a short 10 minute walk from the centre of town.

The Jacaranda Festival is held in Applecross, in November of each year. As you reach the Festival, you will be greeted by the purple coloured blossoms of the Jacaranda trees that line the streets of Applecross. The Festival is held in recognition of the annual flowering of these purple flowers and why not. It’s a great excuse to have a festival!

Since its inception, the Festival has gotten bigger each year, with many different stalls on offer. I arrived there with my family just before midday and we were greeted by a hive of fun and activity as we approached the village. The twin ice cream cones welcome arch at the southern entrance add a rather fun festival feel.

The last day of Sculpture by the Sea is today, so if you were thinking of checking it out, you had better hurry on over to Cottesloe Beach.

My partner and I headed down there last night to view the exhibition, which is located in the vicinity of Indiana Tea House, 91 Marine Parade.

When we arrived, Cottesloe Beach was absolutely bustling with activity and a throng of people enjoying the atmosphere. It was a beautiful night to watch the sunset against the backdrop of Greg James’s tall, strong Coastguard sculpture located at the end of the jetty. The sculpture has a talking point that you can’t miss. Might we say that the prominent feature kind of sticks out.
