Day (After Day) in The Life Of The Useless by Black Swan State Theatre Company

My partner and I headed to the Heath Ledger Theatre on a slightly rainy evening, looking forward to watching the opening night of Black Swan State Theatre Company’s latest play - Day (After Day) in the Life of the Useless by Will O’Mahony.
We are no strangers to O’Mahony’s works – both as a playwright (Tonsils and Tweezers) and after watching him perform in plays including HIR, Things I Know to be True, Angels in America, and Glengarry Glen Ross. In this current production he is both the playwright and lead actor.
Day (after Day)’s absurdist style had me in fits of laughter from the get go. Pete’s life starts out pretty ordinarily – with normal events and sometimes not so ideal occurrences happening to him in the course of his daily life - he then gets hit from all fronts with various life issues – work, relationships (being dumped by his fiancee), money problems. The usual sort of issues that most of have to deal with from time to time.
But his circumstances soon spiral way out of hand – and a bizarre turn of events and forces beyond his control take over his life.
The Party's Over at Luna

I was lucky enough to watch the preview of The Party’s Over (Classe Moyenne). The trailer had caught my attention as Laure Calamy (one of my favourite actresses) is starring in it. My partner and I had seen her in the French TV series “Call my Agent”which we had thoroughly enjoyed watching.
Set the scenario of a wealthy French couple (Phillipe and Laurence Trousselard) with their daughter Garance, spending 3 relaxing months at their luxurious holiday home in the south of France – complete with a pool on the edge of the property with spectacular views – with everything attended to by an on-site caretaker family (the Azizi’s) who have been looking after the property for many years. All the Trousselards have to do every day is relax, until things take a turn for the worse when the Azizi’s spark a flame with words and actions that cannot be retracted, bringing tensions that have been brewing for some time to the boil.
Bon Voyage Marie at Luna

I was lucky enough to watch Bon Voyage Marie before it opens at Luna Palace Cinemas. It caught my attention as my favourite genre of films is French.
The story of Bon Voyage Marie revolves around Grandmother Marie, who takes her family and carer on a road trip of a lifetime. But it is not for the reasons that the family think and the trip has no return ticket – not for her anyway.
Marie, who has terminal cancer, chooses to participate in volunteer assisted dying in Switzerland.
One would think that such a serious topic would create a movie that is sombre and serious.
But this movie had me belting out hearty laughs pretty much right from the get go. Grandmother’s humour is infectious (she makes reference to mouldy potatoes and shiny apples! - You’ll have to watch the movie to understand the context!) as she contemplates and executes the serious decision to end her life – not without its challenges to accomplish.
The Almighty Sometimes by Black Swan State Theatre Company

I didn’t know what I was walking into with The Almighty Sometimes. I’d read that it was an award-winning mental health drama, and… that’s about it.
Going in with no expectations can be a good thing – and in this case, it made Kendall Feaver’s harrowing debut script all the more impactful.
A vaguely eerie, yet ethereal blue-toned stage greets us upon entry. Then, out of the shadows, paediatric psychiatrist Vivienne (played by Amy Mathews) begins to read a disturbing passage written by one of her young patients, Anna (‘Ana Ika).
Anna has recently turned 18 – and most of her childhood and adolescence has been characterised by severe mental illness and constant medications.
Company by WAAPA

On a busy Saturday evening in Northbridge, my partner and I headed to the Studio Underground at the State Theatre Centre of WA to watch Company by WAAPA.
Having seen several shows by WAAPA musical theatre students – we knew we were in for a treat.
This time we were there to watch the musical Company by Stephen Sondheim – a classic musical that graced the stages in the 1970’s, then had its hit Broadway revival in 2022, with its themes of relationships, friendships and connections.
And it remains as timely and relevant as it was back in its hey day and perhaps even more so – with the level of mobile phones and technology that pervades our day to day lives – but which can ironically sometimes leave us feeling more lonely and isolated.
Company revolves around Bobby, a single Manhattanite who is turning 35 and still a bachelor – he is surrounded by all his caring friends who are happily married and partnered up in life in the era of the 70s in the hustle and bustle of New York City.
But what has happened to Bobby? And why is he still single?
