Are we turning our cities into places that are easy to get to but not worth arriving at? How can 'typical' cities provide their citizens with a quality of life that makes them want to stay?
Renowned US author, city planner and architectural designer Jeff Speck believes the answers to these questions come down to one key factor - walkability.
Speck, who will be in Perth next week to present a public lecture at the State Theatre Centre of WA on Wednesday, 16 October, has dedicated his career to what makes cities thrive. He believes in building walkable urban places for economic, social, health and environmental benefits.
His US experience has great resonance in Australia, and particularly for Perth as the city undergoes its latest transformation.
For Bollywood fans in Perth, the evening of Wednesday the 9th of October was all about three letters: S – R – K.
The King of Bollywood (that’s Shahrukh Khan for the uninitiated) and his trio of screen-queens – Jacqueline Fernandez, Rani Mukherjee and Madhuri Dixit, all held court for a three-hour-plus Bollywood extravaganza in our city.
Joined by Punjabi rapper Yo Yo Honey Singh and Indian Idol alumni Meiyang Chang who emceed, the three Bollywood icons and the debutante (Fernandez) lit up the stage, all accompanied by over a hundred dancers from India.
The show, choreographed by Geeta Kapor, was a big coup for Perth, having only been performed in Auckland and Sydney.
First Comes Love, Perth’s original alternative bridal fair celebrates its third year with a move to an historic new venue.
On Saturday 5th October 2013, the stunning St Georges College in Crawley plays host to this iconic event, featuring WA’s freshest and most creative artisans and independent businesses, showcasing their wares and services for a discerning clientele.
First Comes Love is the perfect remedy to cookie-cutter, mass-produced wedding expos. Moving away from stretch Hummers and teeth-whiteners, First Comes Love is for those looking to walk the ‘aisle’ less-travelled.
Tucked away down an arcade behind local favorites Grill'd and Gelare is a bustling Japanese sushi eatery called Mr Munchies Sushi - which has been open since October last year and has rapidly made its mark in the Mt Lawley dining scene.
The inside of the restaurant has a contemporary casual feel with low table chairs and an arty background against one wall, while the orange uniformed staff run like a well oiled machine with orders churning out to keep the hungry masses fed. On the weeknight that I popped in, the place was cooking gas, and the busiest café by far in the complex, along with Grill'd.
Everyone is invited to explore the Swan Regional Riverside Park, where the Riverside Ramble is being held on Sunday the 13th of October 2013 from 10am to 4pm at the Reg Bond Reserve, Bernley Drive, Viveash.
The Riverside Ramble is a partnership project between the City of Swan and the Stratton Lions Club, and this is an excellent free community event with a huge range of activities all set in beautiful surrounds beside the Swan River.
There will be artists dotted throughout the park and as people explore the walk trails they will also discover a medieval fair, market stalls, free rides, face painters, circus activities and camel rides to name a few.
There is a Doggies Breakfast at the park, complete with on-site vet checks, a doggy walk and prizes. So our four legged friends can enjoy a day out as well.
Looking for the best vegetables in Perth? Tucked away in the back streets of Inglewood you’ll find a stall selling fresh and crisp heirloom vegetables. Mark is the man who runs this unassuming vegetable stall in front of Mondos’ Butchers. He is there rain or shine each Saturday from around 8.30am to 2.30pm selling the fruits of his labours.
