Like most major cities in Australia, Perth is a very diverse metropolis.
The state capital of Western Australia attracts plenty of international tourists (700,000 overseas visitors in 2011), as well as expatriates and immigrants.
Most recent arrivals originate from other English-speaking countries, such as New Zealand, South Africa, and the UK, and from an array of Asian countries.
It doesn’t come as a surprise that nearly 50% of all people in Perth don’t speak English at home: they prefer their native languages instead.
There are several reasons for Perth’s popularity.
Fasten your seat belts for the Fringe World Festival in Perth which will begin with a bang on the 24 January 2013. You can look forward to a star studded line up of shows - some guaranteed to tickle your funny bone, others to shock, and some that are purely great entertainment.
If you are on the fringe about going, don’t be. It's the perfect chance to witness new talents just hitting the stage, famous celebrity performers, or better yet, be a part of the action. Fringe Festivals are popular all the world over, and Perth’s own Fringe Festival has made its mark in the arts world around the globe.
The program for Black Swan State Theatre Company's production of Stephen Adly Guirgis' The Motherfucker with the Hat contains the following warning:
The Motherf**ker with the Hat contains extremely frequent coarse language, explicit sexual descriptions, drug use, adult themes, possible nudity, smoking of herbal cigarettes on stage and strobe lighting.
Judging from the warning, you would be forgiven for expecting this play to be a crude attempt to shock audiences with low life characters that disgust, and a storyline that scrapes the bottom of the barrel for depravity and excess. The stage for the opening scene certainly seems to indicate that this will be the case, featuring a seedy New York apartment that practically oozes heat, sweat and grime.
But while the warning proved to be 100% accurate, playwright Stephen Adly Guirgis has taken all these elements and put them together in such a way that the most shocking parts of the play are not the profanities, sex talk, drugs or nudity, but the interactions between the characters.
A morning run along the banks of the Swan River, basking in King's Park in January, or heading over to Fremantle for fish and chips along the harbour; these are just a few of my favourite Perth memories. I first came here a little more than two years ago and ever since, I've been desperate to book another Australian adventure. It's definitely on my must-visit list for a 2013 holiday - there always seems to be plenty going on no matter what the season.
If you don't fall in love with the waterfront sunsets and the incredible surf, there's always the gorgeous Swan Valley with its panoramic views, not to mention all the wine. I also found it pretty tough to name just a few of the things I love about this laid-back Australian city, so I've done one better and given you my top 10 picks for what to do in Perth.
Broome…laid back and balmy, a great escape during the winter time in Perth or anytime really. If you’re looking to quench your thirst, then make sure to visit the Matso’s Brewery for their range of ciders and beers. A visit to Broome wouldn’t be complete without tasting the range of brews that this family owned company crafts.
At Perth Walkabout, we are always on the hunt for those special locally made products which are a real treat to the senses….whether to the taste buds, eyes, or palate, you name it. And when we do discover them, we are over the moon.
Lancelin is a beautiful sea side town around one hour from Perth, and makes for an easy day trip north up the coast of Western Australia. Keep going up the coast and you may just find yourself in Exmouth or even Broome!
The trip to Lancelin is an easy drive along the Indian Ocean Drive. Take the Mitchell Freeway, pass through Joondalup, take the turn for Wanneroo Road, which leads to Lancelin Drive, and then head straight up the Indian Ocean Drive. You’ll pass by Yanchep, and the small seaside towns of Seabird and Ledge Point to get there.
