Esther-Cafe-Como-2-180

If you are looking for a cosy place to sit down and have a chat with a friend over a refreshing cup of coffee or tea, along with a cake or toasted sandwich, then follow your nose to the Esther Café at 16 Preston Street in Como (also known as the Cygnet Café, since it is located next to the Cygnet movie theatre in Como).

This cheerful café is run by the charity group The Esther Foundation, which  helps young women who have come from difficult situations develop their life and work skills,  and gain work experience in a hospitality setting.

The girls behind the counter who run the café are friendly, and while chatting to them I learned a bit about the history behind the Esther Café and the Foundation that has been set up to support its members.

The Singapore Chicken Rice restaurant located just near the entrance to the Coventry Village Markets car park does a roaring trade, weekday or weekend. It serves up popular hawker style dishes such as chicken rice, chicken noodles, laksa, Singapore fried mee hoon, char kway teow,  and fish ball mee hoon soup.

On the day that I visited with a friend, the restaurant was packed, and we had to wait for a table, though not too long though luckily. I tossed up between having the chicken rice and the chicken noodles (with wanton noodles). As it was my first time here, I decided to try the signature chicken rice. My friend and her young son also decided to have the chicken rice, as well as the laksa served with prawns, tofu, and rice noodles.

For around $10, you can have delicious fresh authentic hawker dishes served up to you.

South-Pacific-Perth-180

The much awaited musical South Pacific is now showing at Crown Theatre, and its mass appeal was confirmed by the size and range of the crowd waiting in eager anticipation last night.

The relationship of South Pacific with Australians has been a long and loving one, dating way back to 1952 when it was first performed at Her Majesty’s Theatre in Melbourne, though the first Roger and Hammerstein production to hit Australia was actually Oklahoma!

It's now 2013, and performances of The Lincoln Centre Theatre Production of the all time classic South Pacific presented by Opera Australia and John Frost continue to enchant crowds, with its romantic story line, impressive musical score and sheer energy of the cast.

When a play has you watching a girl in a canary yellow bridesmaid dress and high heels potraying an elderly Scottish crime boss chasing the hero through the streets and parks of Edinburgh, and it all seems perfectly normal, then you know you are watching something out of the ordinary.

And yet Midsummer (a play with songs) showing at Black Swan State Theatre Company is far from being a wacky off the wall comedy.

We were alerted to this concert by a friend and grabbed the chance to go to the GALSWA 20th Anniversary Concert at the Fly By Night Club in Fremantle.

The theme for the concert was Harmony in Diversity. The choir sings beautifully with about 20 singers performing a varied repertoire, mostly a cappella including pop, show tunes and Motown. For a community choir, they take on a challenging repertoire and do it very, very well.
