Perth can finally boast its own big markets in Morley, which have become a popular attraction with locals and visitors coming from far and wide.
Coventry Square Markets opened its doors in late 2011 after major development works were completed to transform the old Coventry Group’s site to what it is today. Its brand spanking new premises offer up a selection of 170 shops to browse through, sprawled over an area of 11,000 square metres. So it’s time to get your walking shoes on!
Someone once said about Perth: “It is closer to nowhere than anywhere.”
Being one of the most isolated cities in Australia (and possibly the world) does have an upside. Distance has made the locals who they are: resourceful, independent and creative. Necessity does that, it seems.
Perth’s pulsing arts and culture scene reflects this cowboy spirit of innovation.
In recent years, the city has shed off its sleepy backwater vibe to become a fabulous playground for traditional and contemporary artists, musicians, performers, designers, dancers and writers.
For all you art and culture lovers, you’re spoilt for choice.
Settle in Perth for a month and prepare to explore not only the city, but also the beautiful regions that surround it. The stunning, year-round weather and multitude of festivals throughout the year makes anytime a good time to visit.
Start off your trip exploring the city. You may wish to take a city walking tour when you first arrive or just arm yourself with a good map and a healthy dose of exploratory spirit.
Have you ever watched a local theatre show in Perth? If you haven’t, you are missing out big time. Perhaps you spotted our recent post about theatre sports in Perth that was recently published on Perth Walkabout.

A few long running theatre groups such as The Old Mill Theatre and the Harbour theatre at Fremantle come to mind.
On this night, we were looking forward to our subscription tickets for KADS (the Kalamunda Amateur Dramatic Society), which is the local theatre group that runs from their tiny theatre just off the main strip of the Kalamunda town area.
Farewell to Planet Video…the iconic video shop located on the corner of Walcott and Beaufort Street in Mt Lawley that was a film fetishist's delight, with a range of mainstream and off-beat films to suit all tastes.
If Mount Lawley is in your neck of the woods and you frequent this happening café strip, you might have noticed that all was not well on the corner of Walcott and Beaufort Street. Alas, we have to report the sad news that Planet Video has officially closed.
There are quite possibly more sublime free experiences than lying back on a cool, clear evening and watching an outback sky transit from glorious sunset to a spectacular theatre of stars, but for the moment what it could be escapes me.
We ventured around six hours north-east of Perth to a station 50kms south of mining town Mt Magnet to find a camping spot. The drive itself is part of the experience. Don’t hit the north western highway too early, instead wind your way through Toodyay and Dalwallinu.
